Financing Options for Entrepreneurs Part III

The Ottawa Network (TON)’s 3 x 10 panel is a monthly event focussed on entrepreneurial aspects of the technology community. Each panel features 3 speakers presenting for 10 minutes each. This month’s speakers are Raymond Luk from Flow Ventures, Cecilia Moore from BDC Subordinate Financing and Peter Kemball from Acorn Partners.

Raymond Luk, Flow Ventures

Flow Ventures is a tech start-up accelerator that provides seed capital and hands-on operational support to early-stage ventures. Flow uses a unique model which combines financing, strategy and hands-on operational services designed to grow new ventures quickly and efficiently. By operating key areas of your startup including finance, software development, HR, business development and administration, Flow allows entrepreneurs to focus on their products and their customers rather than building infrastructure and capacity. Raymond Luk is the founder and managing director of Flow Ventures. He has been building and managing startups for over a decade in the capacity of CEO, fundraiser, investor, turnaround specialist and consultant.

Cecilia Moore, BDC Subordinate Financing

BDC Subordinate Financing provides funding for growing companies that may lack the security required by lenders to secure a regular term loan, or companies that are looking to raise funds without diluting the equity ownership of the business. Subordinate financing can be considered an “equity investment using debt instruments” and are used, at BDC, to fund market development, product development, general working capital requirements as well as acquisition financing and management buy-outs. Generally the funding is targeted to companies that are cash-flow positive, thus being a later stage option. Cecilia Moore is the manager of subordinate financing at BDC. Her focus is on business development and meeting companies in the community that are potential candidates for subordinate financing and assisting them in their growth and expansion plans.

Peter Kemball, Acorn Partners

Acorn Partners finances Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the business-to-business sector of the market when other avenues are either not possible or not desirable, using the same successful concepts underlying this use of a credit card in the business-to-consumer sector. Using the credit worthiness of customers as part of their financing criteria allows Acorn to support entrepreneurs who would otherwise not be. Peter Kemball is the CEO and founder of Acorn Partners. Prior to founding Acorn Partners, Mr. Kemball co-founded a financial services firm-Kemball Fund Management, a Limited Market Dealer specialized in raising funds for early stage firms..
